Dictionaries are also available within PocketSword, including Easton's Bible Dictionary and Nave's Topical Bible Dictionary. Popular Commentaries available in the English language include: Matthew Henry's Complete Commentary on the Whole Bible (as well as the "Concise" version), Treasury of Scripture Knowledge, John Wesley's Notes on the Bible, Abbot, Barnes, Geneva, Luther and more. When you download this app, it comes with the KJV & Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on the Whole Bible pre-installed, but you can use the downloader within PocketSword (located under the More tab) to choose which additional modules you wish to download from CrossWire and have available for offline use. Modules are available for download (offline use) within the app, with permission granted by the various copyright holders to CrossWire to distribute them for use in its apps. PocketSword is a Bible Study app for the iPad, iPhone & iPod touch (iOS 8.0 and above) that is built upon the powerful SWORD backend developed by the CrossWire Bible Society. While you can save bookmarks, look up words or verses in the dictionary, and the single built-in commentary is helpful, the app could use some work. The formatting issue makes it hard to read, the download requirements are frustrating and time consuming, and browsing is tough. Pocket Sword is a decent Bible app, but it falls short in a number of ways that other apps with similar functions do not. While you can go to a specific verse or search after installing the search index, it's hard to sort through text when it's all jumbled up. Paragraphs are not spaced properly and so most of the text runs together. Another issue we found is that the text has some formatting issues. This all works well enough, but the sheer lack of options out of the box limits the use of the app, especially if you heed the warnings about downloading. Despite a warning message about third-party access to your device that was a bit alarming, the download feature offers quite a few upgrades to the app, all for free. The app is expandable, as well, with options to download other versions of the Bible, search indices (you cannot search by default), and commentary files.
While the app doesn't offer quite the depth of other Bible readers on the App Store, it is free and clearly has the accessibility of the material in mind in each of its design choices.Īfter downloading, you can start reading right away. PocketSword is a Bible reading app - it comes complete with the King James Version of the Bible when downloaded and offers a handful of useful, albeit often limited tools for reading the Bible.
